Due to our current economic times, shuttle bus expenses have increased significantly. In 2006, we paid $24,000 for shuttle bus services at the Fall Leadership Conference and this year the cost has increased to $44,000. Unfortunately, this huge price increase is dramatically over our budgeted amount and we did not want to pass along these costs to the students and chapters. Our shuttle bus services will be running in the evening(s) for this conference. (Shuttle bus schedule is attached) The schedule has provided enough time for travel to and from the hotels which are all located within a 3-5 block radius of Meydenbauer Center. Please encourage your students to bring an umbrella, coat, and appropriate walking shoes. In addition, included in your registration packet, is a Bellevue Restaurant Guide to assist you in finding nearby dining options. We appreciate your support and understanding during these challenging economic times! ***We will provide full shuttle bus service at SCDC due to competition. At age 24, Josh Sundquist is a Paralympic ski racer and nationally known inspirational speaker. Josh shares stories about losing his leg to cancer, ski racing in the Paralympics, and playing practical jokes with his artificial leg to give practical motivation for overcoming adversity and goal setting. Josh's presentations are extremely high energy—during a single keynote he will run, sing, dance, free-style rap and jump off the stage several times. He uses this excitement to focus students' attention on his core message: The secrets of great student leaders.
The Jim Wand experience will go Beyond Imagination. A Washington DECA favorite, Dr. Jim Wand provides a mix of professional stage hypnosis and important life lessons. His performance along with the support of volunteers will keep the audience on the edge of their seats. General Session Keynote Speaker Robert Matthews is a Washington DECA Alumni and former Western Region Vice President. He is currently writing a book, “Life is a Game. Play to Win.” He shares several insights from his personal life, business and marketing experiences. He will incorporate his experiences and success in developing the Nintendo Wii ad campaign. His presentation is guaranteed fun!
Pete Nordstrom will share the history of the Nordstrom Company, the Nordstrom customer service philosophy and branding. In addition he will share the success of Nordstrom in overcoming challenges of the retail industry. He will share his secrets to success and provide advice to students who want to become successful business leaders. Elite Leadership Training Each Chapter Advisor will select two outstanding chapter leaders to attend the Elite Leadership Training Academy. This 3-hour workshop intensive, offered Monday afternoon at FLC, will provide excellent tools and resources for successful chapter leadership. ELTA will be a high-energy, fun and fast-paced learning opportunity with outstanding keynote speaker, Tracey Turcotte, of Washington Business Week, as well as some of our Team Momentum state officers. Topics covered include practical how to's on becoming successful leaders, running effective chapter meetings, maximizing and growing your membership and gaining the competitive edge! Each chapter present will also receive a special "leadership toolkit", a 45-page resource guide produced by last year's National DECA Officer Team. Please send your chapter's representatives to ELTA prepared to share one or two "best practices" that have been successful for your local chapter. Graduates of the ELTA will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment and will receive an exclusive invitation to participate in our first Washington DECA State Senate Summit on Tuesday morning at FLC. At the Senate Summit, representatives will learn about statewide initiatives and have an opportunity to voice their opinions about key issues facing our chapters and organization. Both opportunities will be a great investment for your members and are included in the price of registration. While we encourage you to consider sending sophomores and juniors, we welcome two of your "best and brightest" to attend and network with nearly 200 of our state's finest leaders! Questions can be directed to Lisa Jensen, lisa@wadeca.org. Ronald McDonald House The State Officer team has selected Ronald McDonald House as our statewide community service project. The Ronald McDonald House provides a caring, supportive home to families who are in Seattle, Portland and Spokane while their children are receiving medical services and support. Washington DECA members will continue the tradition of supporting a local charity through fundraising events at their local chapters. Statewide "Ziploc Drop" at FLC! The Challenge is on..... Please help us get your chapter members excited about hitting our state goal of collecting 3,000 boxes of ziploc bags for the Ronald McDonald House, our statewide community service project! Team Momentum will be conducting a Ziploc Bag Drive at our Fall Leadership Conference, challenging chapters to bring the most boxes of new ziploc bags (any size) to registration or your Area Meeting on Sunday, October 26th. The area who brings the most boxes of new ziploc bags (don't worry we'll base it on the size of your area!) will receive special recognition at FLC! Please get your whole school and community involved in helping the Ronald McDonald House by filling the day-to-day, practical needs of families whose children are being treated for life-threatening illnesses. We will also be conducting a "McDonald House Miracle Minute" during Opening Session, so bring all that loose change to support this worthy cause!! Any questions can go to your local state officer or the WA DECA office. If you're not attending FLC, you can still donate to your local state officer! Thanks so much for your help and support!
