Tim Tan, PresidentTim Tan is your 2008-2009 State President. A senior at Shorewood High school, Tim is only a second year member of DECA. A state finalist in swimming, he serves as his swim team’s Captain and is assistant principal cello for his school's chamber ensemble. In addition to handling a challenging AP class load, Tim has become very involved in his school, establishing and leading two clubs, Table Tennis Club and Key Club. Outside of school, he spends his time serving as Director of Promotions for WHSTTL (Washington High School Table Tennis League), performing at many local community and cultural events, reading sci-fi novels, playing piano, cycling across Seattle, and building computers. Tim leads his life by two quotes: "If it is to be, it is up to me" and "Tiny drops of water make a mighty ocean." Tim looks forward to meeting as many Washington DECA members as possible! Stephanie Lachance, VP of Business PartnershipsStephanie Lachance is your 2008-2009 Vice President of Business Partnerships. Stephanie attends Kelso High School and is a fourth year DECA member. Last year she served as the KHS Chapter President and has been involved with chapter projects and student store affairs. Stephanie is involved in AP courses such as Chemistry, Math and History. Her favorite subject is French and her favorite teacher is Mr. Davis, her DECA advisor. In her free time Stephanie enjoys hanging out with friends and playing the occasional video game. She has been involved in the KHS Swimming and Tennis Teams for three years and enjoys these activities in her spare time. She took sixth place at State for MAP and 4th place at Area with her partner in BMDM. She plans on going to college and studying business. Stephanie is truly thrilled to serve Washington DECA and the members in the coming year! Valerie Mai, VP of Community RelationsSay hello to Valerie Mai, your 2008-2009 Vice President of Community Relations! Goal oriented, overworked, and prone to unusual sleeping habits, Valerie looks forward to serving DECA for her third year. Active in both school and community, she currently serves as Key Club President, ASB Vice President, Prom Committee President, and is finishing up as Junior Class President. In addition to 5 college-bound classes, she is also a proud member of the Lindbergh HS Varsity Cheer Squad, the Varsity Dance Team, National Honor Society, International Club, and Medical Explorers. In addition, Valerie has played the piano for 12 years, played violin for 9 years and loves traveling, editing movies and spending time with friends. After high school, she hopes to attend either Harvard or NYU as a Business Management major. “Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can,” is her motto. Valerie can’t wait to expand the realm of opportunities available for Washington DECA’s extraordinary members. Don’t hesitate to contact her with any questions! Iris Petersen, VP of CommunicationIris Petersen is your Vice President of Communication for 2008-2009. Iris is a junior at Olympia High School and in her third year of DECA. In addition to DECA, Iris loves soccer, snowboarding, and running. "Exercise creates endorphins, endorphins make you happy," so Iris is a pretty happy person! Recently she decided to learn to play the recorder—that instrument everyone despised in the fourth grade. Serving as Co-president of the Baking Club is also one way she spends her time! She can often be found baking with her friends and having a good time spraying flour all over whatever kitchen she happens to be in at the moment. Iris loves the rain in Washington and if you come into her backyard on a rainy night, you'll probably find her, soaking wet, jumping on her trampoline. Meeting new people is definitely a passion for her. She would like to get to know as many of you as possible, so contact her any time! Olivia Church, Area 1 PresidentOlivia Church is your 2008-2009 Area 1 President from Jackson High School, home of the Timberwolves. She has been a DECA chapter officer since freshman year and loves every minute of it. She has attended State each of her three years and Internationals this past year. A true music buff, Olivia listens to ALL kinds of music and has a special passion for Tony Bennett, All Time Low, and Jesse McCartney. She also has a huge collection of rubber ducks, about three hundred and counting! In her spare time, Olivia works as a barista and ice cream scooper at the Spotted Cow. She also sings in the choir at her church, and plays soccer. She dreams of attending University of Oregon and majoring in entrepreneurship with the hope of opening her own wedding consulting agency. Olivia also loves to bake, hang out with friends, go to the movies, and wants to learn how to pilot a plane. She hopes to go skydiving for her eighteenth birthday next April. Olivia looks forward to rocking it as your Area 1 President! Charli Santos, Area 2 PresidentCharli Santos is your 2008-2009 Area 2 President from Mariner High School in Everett. She is a senior and third year DECA member. Charli lives with her mom and two younger siblings. She’s a member of Christian Faith Center North and loves working at Ruby‘s Diner. Her personal joys come from reading a good book, watching movies with family, and spending time with friends! In her academic life Charli enjoys AP English, chemistry, and is especially interested in social studies. Charli’s DECA competition history includes third at area and qualifying for state her first, year, earning second place at area, fifth at state and competing at internationals in Atlanta in Apparel & Accessories in her second year! When Charli isn’t doing homework or DECA, she has an intense passion for dance. Her love of dance encompasses contemporary, ballet, tap, and jazz, and she’s currently part of the Mariner HS dance program. Other activities she’s involved in are Fashion Club, the Marauder Crew (her school’s spirit club), Conflict Mediators, Freshman Mentor, and Island Roots Club. Charli plans to attend Seattle Pacific University or University of Washington and major in Business Management or Psychology. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Psalms 30:5 is a life verse that Charli believes has kept her going and will continue to sustain her throughout her term and her life. Charli is extremely excited to serve you for the 2008-2009 year! Tony Elia, Area 3 PresidentYour Area 3 President is Antonio Elia (although he prefers “Tony”). He’s had an interesting life journey so far, studying piano, tap and ballroom dancing, German, French, and Tae Kwon Doe for several years. He even spent a few seasons playing organized football! His love of foreign language came in handy while traveling to Europe in 2005 and 2007. As he enters his senior year at Bothell High School, he’s getting closer to defining his future goals. His favorite things are singing, politics, math, and DECA. Tony has performed in two school musicals and plans to continue pursuing performance opportunities. He’s given voice recitals in multiple languages, but is most proud of his work in Italian baroque. Aside from the arts, Tony is accomplished in academics and loves studying honors math. His interests in politics and business have become passions which explain Tony’s choice to run for DECA state office. It was the fulfillment of a dream for Tony to achieve the office of Area President. He also has held a number of leadership positions with DECA, FBLA and the BHS Thespian Club, but most looks forward to “leading the best of the best” in Area 3! Tony is also a dedicated competitor in both DECA and FBLA, placing 1st at State for FBLA in Business Plan competition. He hopes to attend a premier univeristy such as Vanderbilt or USC and double major in Business and Political Science, but if so, he’ll still be cheering for the UW Huskies in his heart! Brad Mason, Area 5 PresidentBrad Mason is your 2008-2009 Area 5 President. Brad is a senior at Decatur High School and is in his second year of DECA. After joining DECA in his junior year he went to WRLC and decided he just couldn't get enough of it. When he’s not doing DECA you can usually find him at the beach or in the gym, most likely life guarding or teaching swimming lessons at the local pool. He looks forward to serving as the captain of his school's cross country team this fall and being seen with a painted chest in the front row of the crowd at next year's Decatur HS sporting events. Brad hopes to attend one of the beautiful colleges in California or Arizona and plans to major in business or architectural design. He can't wait to serve as your Area 5 President and looks forward to meeting and hearing from as many of you as possible. Matt Huisingh, Area 6 PresidentMatt Huisingh is your 2008-2009 Area 6 President. Matt attends Kamiakin High School and is in his third year of DECA. He learned about DECA from a friend in his freshmen year and has become more involved every year. When not working on DECA, he can almost always be found on the tennis courts practicing with his friends or teaching kids the fundamentals. Matt likes to chill with his friends late on the weekends and has been known to find the hottest music before anyone else. He lives life to the fullest and is always out living his life to the max while others are sleeping. "I can sleep when I die," is what he believes. Matt plans on attending the University of Oregon, where he will major in sports marketing and study law. He looks forward to serving you as the Area 6 President and hopes that you will talk to him by any means necessary. Justin Piger, Area 7 PresidentJustin Piger is your 2008 - 2009 Area 7 President and attends Governor John R. Rogers High School as a senior. Justin’s leadership and management style is one of empowerment, encouraging everyone to be involved in making decisions. He works relentlessly to bring people together on the values and beliefs that matter. Justin strongly believes in the following concept that “freedom is the unalienable right of mankind and that we all must fight for the things we believe in; because if not us, then who, and if not now, when?” This summer Justin will be traveling on his third “work and witness” mission trip to Kudjip, Papua New Guinea. While there, he will work at a local hospital assisting with the construction of a new wing. Justin also greatly enjoys spending time with his family and friends and attending DECA conferences! He plans to attend college and upon graduation launch a political career that he hopes one day will take him to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! He also has plans to start a web company in the coming year and has aspirations to write a book on life. Justin’s focus is upon building relationships with people and you’ll almost always find him on social network sites or his own blog! Elizabeth Morrison, Area 9 President“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!" -Phil. 4:13 is a life verse for Elizabeth Morrison, your 2008-2009 Area 9 President. She uses that strength often as she cycles across historic Vancouver and plays volleyball for Prairie High School. She balances Running Start college courses, AP classes and working as a barista for Starbucks. When not at school or work, you can find Elizabeth mentoring freshman through Link Crew, taking pictures, reading a book, or hanging out with her best friends. She is a third year DECA member and has previously served as her Chapter Secretary. She competes in a variety of categories such as QSRM, MAP, CAP, and is working to help her SBE reach the gold level! Elizabeth plans to attend Biola or Northwood University and graduate with a Master of Business Administration. She looks forward to serving you in an effective leadership capacity as your Area 9 President. Elizabeth would love to connect with as many Area 9 members as possible! Rusty Roberts, Area 10 PresidentRusty Roberts is your 2008-2009 Area 10 President and a senior at Wenatchee High School. This will be his fourth year of DECA. Serving as Chapter President in his junior year, he hopes to make even more strides this year as an Area President. Aside from his DECA involvement, Rusty is the President of the WHS National Honor Society, a member of the Senior Class Senate, and an active member of his school's Young Democrats Club. He has a strong interest in the political process and currently serves as a state delegate. While taking a rigorous class load, Rusty procrastinates on schoolwork by skiing and playing music as much as he can. Never passing up the chance to play recreational sports, he also counts varsity track among his many athletic pursuits. He lives by the advice of the great Voltaire, who said, "The best way to become boring is to say everything." So, this biography is ending! If you’re not bored yet, contact Rusty, he’d love to get to know you better! Zach Harper, Area 11 President"Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility." (Dietrich Bonhoeffer) As your 2008-2009 Area 11 President, Zach Harper is ready for responsibility! He’s a dedicated Deer Park HS Stag where he’s extremely active in athletics and the Executive ASB. He’s very easy to find in the school or community, and always talking to someone new. As a four year DECA member, Zach has experienced it all with his chapter. He has served as the Assistant Concessions Manager, Concessions Manager, Public Relations Officer, was elected Chapter President after sophomore year. Zach has placed 1st at Area for three successive years and also achieved top 10 finishes at State each year! He has competed in Tech Sales and Buying and Merchandising Team. On weekends, Zach likes to chill with friends and family. He’s the youngest sibling, with 2 brothers and 1 sister. Family is the most important thing to him and he loves his four nephews and baby niece, Paisley. During the winter Zach loves to snowboard and in the summer he’s always at the lake. He relies on his Blackberry to keep things tight with school, family, work and friends. Zach plans to attend UCLA to earn a Masters in Business Administration. Zach wants to get to know you TODAY!
